After breakfast at your hotel, a 1-hour drive takes you to Machame Gate. Formal registration and permits are completed, and then you begin trekking through dense rainforest, with towering fig trees, giant ferns, and colorful birdlife surrounding you. The air is humid and trails can be muddy, but the gradual ascent helps you adjust. You’ll enjoy a packed lunch mid-way through the hike. After about 5–6 hours, you reach Machame Camp where tents are set up. A light washing session is offered before a hot dinner is served. Your guide will brief you on the next day. Sleep early under the starlit African sky.
The trail steepens today, leading you out of the rainforest and into heath and moorland zones. Vegetation becomes sparser, and giant heathers dominate the landscape. The trail offers the first panoramic views of Kibo Peak and Mount Meru. After 4–5 hours of trekking, you arrive at Shira Camp, located on a plateau with stunning sunset views. Lunch is enjoyed on the trail. On arrival, you rest, enjoy a light washing service, and have a hearty dinner. Guides will monitor your acclimatization closely as you gain significant elevation today.
Today focuses on acclimatization. You ascend to Lava Tower (4,640m), where you'll have lunch and spend some time at high altitude to adapt. Expect colder winds and rockier paths. After lunch, you descend into the beautiful Barranco Valley, where the iconic Giant Senecio plants grow. This hike (6–7 hours) helps prepare your body for the summit push later. Dinner is served early at Barranco Camp, nestled at the foot of the looming Barranco Wall. Expect cooler night temperatures.
After an early breakfast, the day starts with an exhilarating scramble up the Barranco Wall — a non-technical but thrilling climb using hands and feet. From the top, you enjoy some of the best views on Kilimanjaro. The trail continues across rocky ridges and alpine desert landscapes, leading to Barafu Camp. You’ll rest briefly during a picnic lunch along the way. Upon arrival, camp is set up, and you’ll rest early after a light dinner, preparing for the midnight summit attempt. Make sure all gear is ready for the night.
Summit night begins around midnight. You trek slowly, using headlamps to light your way. The climb to Stella Point (5,756m) on the crater rim is mentally and physically challenging, with steep switchbacks in cold conditions. After a brief rest at Stella, the trail to Uhuru Peak, Africa’s highest point, is a gentle incline along the crater edge. Enjoy a sunrise you’ll never forget. After celebrating at the top, you descend to Barafu for a short rest and brunch, then continue down to Mweka Camp. Dinner and a well-deserved sleep await.
After a leisurely breakfast, a gentle 3–4 hour descent through the lush rainforest leads you to Mweka Gate. It's often slippery, so poles help. After signing out, you receive your summit certificates: green for reaching Stella Point, gold for reaching Uhuru Peak. A driver meets you and returns you to your hotel in Moshi for a well-earned celebratory meal and rest.
