After breakfast at your hotel, a scenic drive leads you to Machame Gate, where registration formalities are completed. Trekking kicks off through dense tropical rainforest, teeming with exotic birds and monkeys. The well-maintained trail is slightly steep, with thick undergrowth and damp conditions — gaiters are highly recommended. Midway, you’ll break for a packed lunch under the shade of giant fig trees. Continuing uphill for 5–6 hours, you finally reach Machame Camp where tents are prepared. After freshening up, a warm dinner is served as you soak in your first mountain sunset.
Today’s trek is shorter but steeper, transitioning from rainforest into moorland. The landscape opens up, offering magnificent views of Mount Meru and the Shira Plateau. You hike through giant heathers and volcanic rock fields, reaching higher elevations that help your body adjust. A picnic lunch is taken on the trail. After 4–5 hours, you arrive at Shira Camp, perched on a plateau with expansive views. After setting camp, you can take an optional acclimatization hike higher up before returning for a hot dinner under the starry skies.
Today is crucial for acclimatization. After breakfast, you trek upward across barren alpine desert, gradually reaching the surreal Lava Tower formation at 4,630 meters. Here, you pause for lunch and spend valuable time at high altitude to assist your body’s adjustment. The route then descends into the lush Barranco Valley, offering more oxygen-rich air and dramatic views of towering cliffs and giant lobelias. After 7 hours of hiking, you settle at Barranco Camp for washing up and a hearty dinner. Early rest is advised for tomorrow’s adventure.
After a filling breakfast, you tackle the famous Barranco Wall — an exhilarating climb requiring hands and feet to ascend the rocky sections (no technical climbing needed). After reaching the top, panoramic views of Kibo and the surrounding valleys reward your effort. The trail then undulates across small ridges and valleys, eventually leading to Karanga Camp. A hot lunch is served upon arrival, and you’ll enjoy a relaxed afternoon to aid acclimatization. After tea and snacks, dinner is served early to prepare for the higher elevations ahead.
Today’s climb is shorter but at higher elevation. You ascend steadily over barren landscapes and cross rocky terrain on your way to Barafu Camp. This camp serves as your base camp for the summit attempt. You arrive by early afternoon, allowing ample time to rest, hydrate, and mentally prepare for the summit push. After an early dinner, your guide briefs you thoroughly on the summit night routine. Get as much sleep as possible — the big night begins soon after midnight.
Summit night starts with a wake-up call around 11:00 PM. After a light snack, you set off under starlight across steep switchbacks toward Stella Point (5,756m). Here, you rest briefly to witness the golden sunrise before trekking along the crater rim to the majestic Uhuru Peak — Africa’s highest point! Emotions run high at the summit, and photographs are a must. After celebrating, you descend carefully back to Barafu for a rest and brunch, then continue downhill to Mweka Camp for a hot dinner and a well-deserved sleep.
The final descent through the rainforest takes 3–4 hours. Trails can be slippery, especially if it has rained, so caution is important. Listen to the vibrant birdcalls as you savor your last moments on Kilimanjaro. Upon reaching Mweka Gate, you’ll sign out and receive your official summit certificates. Your driver awaits to return you to your hotel in Moshi. A refreshing shower and a celebratory meal await as you reflect on your incredible achievement.
