Mkomazi National Park is a quiet, uncrowded wildlife sanctuary located along the northeastern border of Tanzania, framed by the Pare and Usambara Mountains. A heavily protected, fenced 55 sq km sanctuary within the park dedicated to breeding and re-establishing the endangered Eastern Black Rhinoceros. Visitors can take guided sanctuary drives to observe these rare animals at close range.
Mkomazi played a critical role in saving the endangered African Wild Dog (Painted Wolf) from local extinction. Reintroduced packs now roam freely across the park and into the neighboring Tsavo ecosystem.
Due to its semi-arid climate, Mkomazi is one of the best places in Tanzania to spot specialized northern dry-zone species rarely seen in the Serengeti or Ngorongoro — including the long-necked Gerenuk, the Fringe-eared Oryx, and the Lesser Kudu.

Mkomazi makes a perfect intermediate stop on a safari route connecting Arusha/Moshi with Lushoto (Usambara Mountains) or Pangani/Zanzibar coastal beaches.
